La Costa is an affluent residential/resort community located in southeast Carlsbad. A master-planned community built along the hillsides and golf courses, La Costa is comprised of several smaller sub-divisions or “villages” as they are locally called. These include Bressi Ranch, Rancho La Costa, La Costa Ridge, La Costa Oaks and La Costa Greens. La Costa falls under the 92009 zip code and is located 35 miles from downtown San Diego, 30 miles from Orange County and 85 miles from Los Angeles.
The first real-estate developments in the area started in the 1960s when 3,500 acres of land were purchased with the intention of turning it into a vacation resort, upscale residential community and golf course. The original golf course and resort opened its doors in 1965 as the Rancho La Costa Inn and its ownership changed hands several times over the years, at one point becoming the La Costa Resort and Spa. In 2014, after being acquired by Omni Hotels and undergoing a $50 million renovation, the resort became the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
At one point La Costa was its own town but has since been absorbed into the city of Carlsbad. Even after annexation, however, La Costa retains its own identity and name to this day. La Costa has earned a reputation over the decades as a playground for the rich and famous – the legendary Rat Pack used to hang out at one of the homes near the golf course. That reputation continues to this day with a number of celebrities owning vacation homes or renting properties in the area.
Homes in La Costa come in all shapes and sizes – homebuyers will find apartments, condominiums and detached homes, many of which come with large parcels of land. Most of the higher end properties tend to be located in private gated communities along the golf course. Due to the hilly terrain, many homes in La Costa are blessed with incredible panoramic views of the surrounding hills, the Batiquitos Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. La Costa is a prime market for vacation rentals and second homes.
Families with kids living in La Costa have their pick from three different school districts: San Dieguito Union High School District of Encinitas, Carlsbad Unified School District and San Marcos Unified School District. Schools located in La Costa include Aviara Oaks Middle School, La Costa Meadows Elementary School and Aviara Oaks Elementary School.
